The Court of Protection – Open to the public?

The new president of the Family Division courts has echoed previous plans to make the Court of Protection open to the public.

The plans have been talked about for some time now, and it was reported yesterday that the new president Sir James Munby agreed with the plans.

The Court of Protection makes important decisions about the lives of people who lack the necessary physical or mental capacity to do so themselves.

The plans are to bring this court in line with the Family Courts.  This would mean that media representatives can attend the court hearings and report their findings to the public.

It is likely that these new plans will be an area of much controversy, with individuals having very different views on whether they should take effect.

It appears however that the view of the decision makers is yes – the new plans are to be welcomed and the Court of Protection will become a public office.
